    Cuenca, Spain; beginning 17th c.;

    Until late in the Middle Ages Spain was the leading country in Europe for knotted carpets. The Arab and Christian worlds intermingled there which inevitably influenced art. Another influence was that of the Armenian master craftsmen who had fled to Spain escaping the Golden Horde. Spanish carpets differ from Oriental ones in technique (the Spanish knot), decoration and colour. Cuenca was the carpet-making centre from the 11th c.
