Corner Cupboard
France; 2nd half 18th c.
These two corner cupboards were made in the 2nd half of the 18th c. (after 1787 the usual name for this type of furniture was encoignure, French corner or corner cupboard). At this time French furniture dominated in quality and determined the main European stylistic elements. In the harmony of their straight lines, surfaces and proportions these cupboards are a fine example of Classicism which rejected the ornate shapes and decoration of Rococo.
