Camille Pissarro
The painting was made soon after Pissarro's return from London in 1871, where he had gone in 1870 to shelter from the Franco-Prussian war. During his stay in London Pissarro greatly lightened his palette under the influence of Constable, Turner and other English landscapists. After he returned to France, he again moved to the small town of Pontoise near Paris, where he often painted scenes from rural life.
