A still life painted in a chromatic scale culminating in the warm yellow of the lemons, to which the whole painting is tonally subordinated, and which is highlighted against the rich nuances of the dark background. The influence of Impressionism can be detected in the conspicuous play of reflections on the metal and fruit.
The diagonal edges of the white table-cloth lead the eye into the distance. The plasticity of the objects, which seem to have been randomly scattered across the painting, is underlined by the interaction of the light and shade. Despite some Impressionist details, Schuch's work done in impasto has been realized in an accurate realistic fashion.
