Adolphe Gustave Binet
Binet, who painted very successful pictures of life in the Paris streets was also a well known painter of horses. This painting shows his enjoyment of the niceties of hunting clothing and equipment.
He recorded many details of the French hunting tradition, which combined civilian and military elements, horse racing and court dressage, thus differing from the English tradition which had affinities with steeple-chasing. In Binet's time the ideal as found in the military riding school in Saumur - came to expression in hunting.
