Infanta María Theresa
ca. 1653-1654
Diego Velázquez
The girl is painted against a dark background, down to the shoulders, the face slightly turned to the left. The live, expressive look is directed to the viewer. The strong moulding of the face is strengthened by the rosiness of her cheeks, the cold greenish shadows and the white reflections of light on the protruding shapes. The lower parts of her wide wig are decorated on both sides with a row of rose buds and bows. The upper right part of the wig is decorated in the same way, and part of a peacock's feather can be seen.
