Christ Blessing and the Virgin at Prayer
ca. 1510
Follower of Robert Campin
The iconography of this diptych is closely connected to the theme of The Saviour of the World, and its direct model is Campin's "pseudo-diptych" in Philadelphia. Further explanation should be sought in the revival of Byzantine iconography in Bruges in the 14th c., in the context of the theme of the "true countenance" of Christ, which is connected to the iconography of Christ's Tomb and the True Cross, and the Byzantine motif of Deesis.
