Christ's Transfiguration
Moscow School, 15th-16th c
Dyonisius Aroepagus lived in the 6th c. and according to his teaching the light of the Lord was too intense to be perceived by man and he called it the "dazzling dark". In this icon this is shown by the dark centre of the great orb behind Christ. A feeling of intense spiritual excitement is portrayed by the pyramidal composition.
