The Virgin sits surrounded by four saints under a rich late Gothic trefoil arch, with twisted double columns, surmounted by flying leaves. On the left St John the Baptist holds a cross of reeds in his left hand and with his right points to the Virgin presaging the great events in the life of Christ. He is a barefoot hermit, and clothed in camel-skin and a cloak thrown over the left shoulder. Behind him stands St Anthony Abbot wearing a monastic habit.
