Hunting Horn
Germany; 16th c.
The horn is made of a single piece of ivory, hollowed and decorated in high relief. A diagonal band in "pearl row" patterning is divided into two parts. On the wider part, towards the opening, there is a scene from the life of St Eustace meeting the deer in the forest. It shows St Eustace in armour kneeling beneath a castle before a white deer which bears a crucifix between its horns.
