Virgin and Child with St John
Italy; 16th c.
Scattered gilded parts of the relief provide vivacity to the darkened marble surface. The high marble relief has strong contrasts of light and deep shades, particularly noticeable in the drapery. Some details of this work are typical of Michelangelo, since the anonymous author tried to approach Michelangelo's formal expression. He did not copy, but only purposefully changed it to create a singular work of art.
