St Anna Selbdritt
Southern Germany; 2nd half 15th c.
The subject of the Holy Kinship dates from the 14th c. and was especially favored at the end of the 15th and during the 16th c. as a result of the growing devotion to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin.
This group is in an older tradition and the size of the figures denotes their ages - Mary being younger than her mother is only half her size. The style and manner of the craftsmanship and the rich drapery folds of the cloak suggests the work of the Southern German master of the 2nd half of the 15th c.
