Chinese carving in ivory, wood, rhinoceros horn, lacquer showed exceptional skill in the rendering of minute detail. Among woods mahogany, box and sandlewood were especially prized which were used to make furniture, and wooden sculpture for Buddhist temples and domestic altars. Decorative figurines and stands for vases were made of rosewood.
