China; Song dynasty; 960-1279 AD
The technique of decorating ceramics applied on this bottle is called cizhou, after the name of the place where the kilns were located (Northern Song). The bottle was coated with a thick layer of brown glaze. After that a stylized phytomorphic ornament was carved. A layer of glaze was removed during the process so that after firing the unglazed parts of the body remained visible and formed an ornament. The technique was used in the north of China from the period of the Tang dynasty until the 14th c.
