Stemmed Goblet
England; 1st quarter 18th c.
This is a perfect example of clarity of glass, luxuriant intricacy of decoration and richness of craftsmanship all creating a harmonious whole. It shows the high level which European glassmaking achieved in the 2nd half of the 17th c. and which was to be passed to succeeding centuries (cutting and polishing were constantly refined, in Bohemia large quantities of lime were added to the basic mixture and in England George Ravenscroft in 1678 developed lead crystal glass).
