Cabinet Cupboard
Italy; early 17th c.
This cabinet cupboard is an example of the high quality that Italian craftsmen managed to achieve in the 17th c., producing this type of luxury furniture in rich Baroque. The exceptional precision of the inlay shows the skill of the craftsmen, and the beauty of the painted ivory proves that some of the most important Italian painters of that time were involved in painting these cupboards. Their lively architectural shapes, the painted sections and the inlay break the "strictness" and give the impression of a great richness of shape. This type of cupboard stopped being produced in Italy and the rest of Europe at the end of the 17th c. There are only a few examples dating from the beginning of the 18th c. (especially those made of Chinese lacquer).
