Scheveningen Women out Walking
1882
Vincent Van Gogh
The painting shows a number of people in a forest glade. In the centre is a row of Scheveningen village women dressed in simple folk costume. To their right a little girl stands looking at them and behind her, in the shadow, two male figures are pressed close together, painted in dark colours.
Behind the women forest trees are shown, outstanding among them beech trees. Stylistically the picture falls into Van Gogh’s Hague period when he had not yet developed his independent expression. In these early years he was very dependent on the styles of the Barbizon and Hague Schools and he greatly admired Millet.
