The man has the characteristic lines of the face of Manet’s friend, the French composer Emmanuel Chabrier (Ambert, Auvergne, 1841 - Paris 1894), a great advocate of Wagner’s music in France. Chabrier with his great inventivity and vitality in solo, choral and orchestral music has an important place in the history of music in France in the nineteenth century.
