Apples
1862-1863
Edouard Manet
In the foreground a lighted group of apples has rolled from an upturned basket, over scattered leaves and hay. The composition is geometrically clear, classical and calm, with emphasis on horizontals. The colours of the apples stand strongly out from the neutral gray background: from vivid red and yellow to red-yellow, green, red-green. Avoiding contours, Manet achieved clarity of form by opposing colours and with curved brush strokes.
