Oysters on a Faience Plate and a Glass of Wine

Manet was especially fond of painting still lifes in the early sixties and at the end of his life, in the eighties. For a long time the Plate with Oysters from 1862 was considered his first known still life, but in time many earlier ones were discovered, including some showing oysters. The oysters that are before us here belong to his youthful work
