Christ and the Woman of Samaria
1839-1840
Constant Troyon
On a wide elevation in the foreground Christ and the woman of Samaria are talking beside the well. The scene is shaded by the immense crowns of two trees beyond which the view stretches towards a sunlit valley with village houses, human figures and a hilly skyline under a cloudy sky. This division of space with clearly bounded, gradually illuminated and subtly linked bands is a debt to the classical landscape of the great Venetians and Claude Lorrain.
