Landscape
ca. 1830
John Constable
In this sketch in oils Constable has taken a stept towards "pure landscape" and the two human forms in it are hardly discernible. He has given a bold presentation of landscape in general rather than concentrating on individual details, and the sea is no more than a green line in the far distance. With a thickly charged brush he painted free representations of background trees and bushes with small and large rounded shapes. The basic colouring is brown and pearly-blue which call up the simple drama of a natural scene.
