Horses Drinking
ca. 1773
Richard Wilson
A village scene of horses being watered painted in a life-like manner. The colours are clear and pure and the diagonal composition leads the eye into the distance with its gently receding houses. The rhythmic balance of light blue and rose impart a romantic picturesqueness to the scene. With simple brushwork a man with a dog is shown to the left, a woman and child to the right, the whole producing a feeling of great veracity achieved with restrained artistic technique.
