Baroque in Spain
(17th c.)
Spanish painting in the 17th c. reveals a variety and a fusion of local traditions, different in every region, and European cosmopolitanism that can be seen at its best in the painting of Velázquez.
The master's travels in Italy (Rome, Venice), his constant acquaintance with Titian's art in the royal collection, and his meeting with Rubens in Madrid in 1628, when the great Flemish painter's exerted a strong influence on the Spaniard, were at the root of Velázquez's knowledge of contemporary art currents.
