Portrait of a Woman
2nd quarter 17th c.
Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp
A realistic portrait of a Dutch woman in the fashionable clothing of the 17th c., in three-quarter profile against a dark background. Most clearly picked out are her pale face and grey-white, fluted and starched ruff. The rose and yellow flesh tones are finely interspersed with the grey of the shadows. She is wearing a typical Dutch cap over brown hair. The drawing is firm and the shadows softly toned. Tonal colour values are consistently executed.
