Landscape with Rainbow
1635-1640;
Peter Paul Rubens, radionica
In his last period (1630-1640), permeated by lyricism and Titianesque art, Rubens painted his Pastoral Landscape with Rainbow (1632-1635) that hangs in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, probably as a rustic version of his Garden of Love of the same year, today in the Prado.
The Mimara painting, smaller in size, is an old copy of the Hermitage painting and most probably is the workshop replica. It shows most of the features as they emerge in the Hermitage painting: a wide valley, arched with a rainbow stretches into the depth of the picture in a delicate transition of planes and colours gradually lightning towards the horizon.
