Representative Selection of Paintings of Various Schools and Countries
(16th-18th c.)
What is today Mimara Museum was built in the last century as a school, and this large Neo-Classical hall was once the school chapel, complete with altar. After the Second World War it was used for school productions and now serves for the exhibition of large paintings and for concerts and special events. The pictures hung here have been chosen for their intrinsic value but also because their size required a hall of large proportions. They come from various European countries and are in various styles: Italian Renaissance and Mannerism (Raffael, Lotto, Veronese), 17th c. Flemish and Dutch Baroque (Rubens, Van Dyck, Eeckhout) and Spanish and English Classicism (Goya, Hoppner).
