Virgin and Child
mid-16th c.
Girolamo da Santa Croce
This painting of the Virgin and Child belongs to the High Renaissance but various elements are reminiscent of Gothic: the blue cloak, the blue screen behind the Virgin, the gold frame with late Gothic tendrils and pillars, the surrounding plant ornamentation. The artist has copied the porcelain-like features and firm delineation of the early Dutch painters.
