Virgin and Child
ca. 1515
Andrea Solario
The foreground is clearly detached from the background by open distyles with round arches, as if two different worlds were involved: the world of saints and the world of nature. The Virgin and Child are brought closest to the viewer by means of size and the warm hues of her red dress. She is representative of the North Italian type of a taper-faced Virgin in a contemplative pose, whereas the naked Jesus with golden locks communicates with the observer.
