(14th-17th c.)
In the 14th c. Cyprus became an important centre for icon painting and the French presence on the island (1192-1498) strengthened western influence. Byzantine art reached new heights after it found a place in Russia. The greatest influence on Moscow art came from Constantinople and on the Novgorod school from western art. The last contact between Western and Eastern art was in the Venetian possessions in the Ionic islands and the Aegean, and Byzantine forms went through Crete and Sicily to Venice (Veneto-Byzantine icons, synthesis of Byzantine and Italian art).
