Head of Gavroche
Medardo Rosso
1882/83;
The boy's freshness and good humour, as well as his agility and marked physical presence differ considerably from Rosso's portrayals of adults dating from the same period of his creative work. Two different versions of Gavroche appear on a photograph of the artist's studio in Milan from 1883, surrounded by a gallery of bizarre characters from his earliest phase. Rosso's early subject matter was invariably taken from marginal members of society and expressed the Republican affiliation of Italian artistic circles in 1880s.
