Shepherdess
Shepherdess
Frankhenthal; ca. 1765
The figure is that of a slender girl arrested in motion. The composition is enriched by elegant details such as the decorative ribbons on the dress and the hat carelessly lying on her left knee. The white sheep lying bottom right contributes a pastoral atmosphere. This became fashionable due to the parties Marie-Antoinette held where noble ladies of the court disguised themselves as peasants.
