Plate
Delft; workshop DPAAW; early 18th c.
A simple flat plate with rough edges and irregular glazing. The entire surface is decorated by a motif, originally known as bliksem dekor or "the lightning pattern". It is typical of Delft ceramics and originates from patterns found on porcelain from the Far East. The name is based on a misinterpretation of the decorative zigzag lines emerging from an irregular central oval shape, like lightning coming out of a cloud.
