Jewelry Casket of Catherine of Hapsburg, Queen of Poland
Augsburg; 2nd half 16th c.
Richness of decoration and superb craftsmanship make this casket a master-piece of Mannerist silver. The basic rectangular shape of the casket is hidden by its curved sides. It rests on four feet shaped like a female body standing on a volute with a bird's leg ending in a claw holding a globe and carrying a base with a lizard.
