Heraklo Farnese
Florence; 16th c. (after 1540)
The most popular hero of Greek mythology is depicted as a middle-aged male nude, reclining on his club with a lion pelt draped over it. Undoubtedly, the anonymous author of this small wooden polychrome master-piece was inspired by the Farnese Hercules, an antique sculpture by Glycon (discovered in 1540). However, after changing some details he produced a fully authentic piece of art.
