Rome; early 16th c.
Italian chests from the 2nd half of 15th c. have narrative, often mythological scenes, Classical subjects and triumphal scenes like this one. The rich decoration on the front, bordered with ornate flowers and mascarons, make it not only functional but decorative, as well. All the elements mentioned continued to be used during the 16th c., and the decorative aspect became dominant in the 17th c.
