Chests were the commonest items of furniture both in medieval and Renaissance times, this one is typical of the decoration and fine proportions of Italian workmanship when medieval simplicity was gradually giving way to lively carving in various patterns. The carving allows us to date the chest to the beginning of the 16th c.
