Pair of Angel-Candlesticks
Netherlands; ca. 1440
The simplicity of the mantle is subordinated to the beauty of the faces and the elaborately carved hair. This very common artistic motif was made by an anonymous Dutch master from the mid-15th c. This corresponds with the period in which wood-carving flourished in those areas and sculptures surpassed the limits of the Gothic expression, announcing a new age.
