These exhibits are late Gothic statues, mainly wood carvings from the 15th c. The late Middle Ages were marked by a sophisticated court culture based on the ideal of knighthood, but also by plague, wars and suffering. These contradictions seem to have found expression in the dual nature of late Gothic carving which unites idealization with a strong sense of naturalism.
