Thurible
Spain, Barcelona, 15. c
This type of silver thurible with its upper section in the form of a miniature architectural construction was developed in the Late Gothic period. The thurible has the 15th century Barcelona hallmark below the top of one of the lower rows of pointed arches.
In the 15th century Catalan Barcelona in the Kingdom of Aragon was the centre of silver making in a strict and formal style almost without decoration.
With its accentuated architectural form in contrast to the reduced leafy decoration the thurible from the Mimara Museum is a fine example of the style and skill of the Barcelona workshops.
