Gothic
(14th-15th c.)
The humanist vein in Gothic art is manifested not only in a more natural movement of the body but in a more profound expression of human feelings, especially in portrayals of Christ's and the Virgin's suffering. This was aimed to awake a sense of compassion and allow people to feel their own part in the Christian drama. This is the reason that the period has so many examples of the Virgin with the Dead Christ, a deeply emotional scene captured in the Pietà (the Netherlands) shown here.
