Choir Stall
England; 14th c.
This is a very fine example of Gothic church furniture of which only a rather small amount still exists. Like similar church fittings such choir stalls were made all over Europe at the time. Church furnishing in particular were early to show Gothic elements in their carving hence it is no surprise to find the pointed towers, the arches below the seat, and the slender lines which grace the whole. Some parts have been recently restored but this has not affected the overall Gothic atmosphere of the time in which it was made.
