Pyx
Limoges; 2nd quarter 13th c.
Small pyxes with cylindrical bodies and cone-shaped lids were among the most common products of the Limoges enamel workshops. Although the Latin root of the word means a wooden container, the word was used in medieval times for various types of boxes, and especially for small ciboriums for the host often intended for taking Communion to the sick.
