Statue of a Woman
Greece; Hellenism; 3rd c. BC
The women are in graceful positions wearing many pleated dresses. The were used for religious purposes, as house ornaments or as playthings. They were made in moulds and later touched up, coloured and provided with individual expression.
Tanagra figurines of this kind were also made in the Middle East, north Africa and south Italy. They were especially frequent in the 4th and 3rd c. BC but production went on until the 1st c. BC.
